README
Welcome
This vault contains the player-facing notes for our campaign. This note aims to help you get set up and familiar with its conventions. Start with installing plugins so that things behave as expected.
Plugins
In your settings, please enable Community Plugins and install the following plugins.
Front Matter Timestamps
This plugin automatically adds created and modified timestamps in the properties of new notes. In the plugin settings, you should exclude the Templates folder — otherwise whatever values end up in there override what would be set in new notes.
Folders
To help keep things organized, notes are arranged in folders. Hopefully the names are self-explanatory!
To make it easier to put new notes in the right folders, we recommend going into the Files and Links settings and setting the Default Location for New Notes to Same Folder as Current File. That means if you’re looking at a location and want to add a new one, it’ll automatically be created in the Locations folder.
Templates
We’ve got templates for different kinds of notes! Please use them, and add new ones as needed.
All templates live in the Templates folder.
To make use of the templates, you’ll need to go into the vault settings, select Core Plugins, find Templates, and open up its settings so that you can tell Obsidian to use the Templates folder.
Then when you make a new note, use cmd-P to pull up the command prompt, choose Templates: Insert Template, and select the template you’d like to add to the note.
Specific types of notes — such as those for a location — have their own templates. For a generic note like this one, use the Misc Template. This will ensure that the note gets set up with the right properties and default prompts.
Properties
Besides the created and modified timestamp properties already mentioned, notes created from our templates use a variety of properties for tracking metadata that we might find useful to drive the graph view or other searching features. They include:
- type: what type of note is it?
- authors: a list of contributors to the note; add yourself as needed!
- aliases: a list of aliases that can be used for linking to a note; ie you can use
[[Strahd]]instead of[[Strahd von Zarovich]]. - tags: ad-hoc tags, in case we want them
Images
You should be able to drop images directly into your note and Obsidian will add them to the attachments folder.
Alternatively, add images to the attachments folder, and embed them like so: ![[Pasted image 20250203113141.png]]
It’s also nice to add a link to the original file immediately after, like so: [[Pasted image 20250203113141.png|Full size]]
See Freemen's Wood for an example!
Session Logs
Session logs get filed in the Session Logs folder and use the Session Log Template. Please name the file using the date in YYYY-MM-DD format, and give it a short note. For some sessions we’ll name them (eg, “Creating Our Starting Town”), but most should be Session N to keep things easy to track.
Please add links as needed for the Previous Session and Next Session to make it easy to navigate one by one in order; there’s a spot for these in the template.
